Brief 2 / Brief - Desktop magazine

For Desktop magazine, Naughty Fish, an Australia design studio, devised a spine totem system featuring illustrations identifying different issues of the magazine. The illustrations form a totem that can be combined in various ways to create new designs. The illustrations create a visual and engaging counterpart to the somewhat clean and clinical aesthetic of the magazine itself — they look great when stacked.

It made me think about how I could identify the issues of my film magazine — could I have a different coloured stock and foil each issue? Also, as I intended on creating a publication for the food perception brief, it was interesting to see how the format and each aspect of a publication is took into consideration.

Brief 2 - Carriageworks

I am now about to start the layout design for my film magazine so thought it would be useful to source some references. I instantly remembered the work by John Barton for the Carriageworks — an event where the cinema screened all of the "Oscar for the Best Picture" nominations. He created the tickets as well as a publication, outlining the film and any relevant information. The layout is clean yet the spot colour is striking.

Brief 2 - Noma Bar

As inspiration for the cover illustrations and imagery within the film magazine, I looked into some of my favourite designer and illustrators. Noma Bar is a particular favourite due to his clever use of negative space to create simple yet striking imagery. The compositions are clean, balanced and his subtle use of colour only enhances his designs. I could potentially use a similar process within my own designs, possibly selecting a featured film to focus on or aspects of a particular genre, for example.

Brief 2 - Finnish Cultural Institute...

Kokoro & Moi created this identity for the Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux — an independent non-profit organisation with the intention of generating collaborative opportunities within the arts and culture industries. The typographical contrasts immediately creates a striking yet inviting identity and balances well with the white spacing.

Brief 2 - Little White Lies process

It is interesting to see the process behind producing a magazine like this — obviously a lot of hard work goes into generating, producing and printing a magazine, let alone collating all the content. It made me think twice about my own magazine. In the group tutorial, it was suggested to start sourcing collaborators to generate content as opposed to collating the entire content myself.

Brief 2 - Olly Moss

I can't do a brief on the topic of film and film posters without a feature on Olly Moss. Olly Moss is a graphic designer and illustrator who is renowned for his film poster designs. With commissions from Empire magazine, he currently has an extensive range of illustrations and designs encompassing multiple design styles but with any of his work, you can automatically tell it is his.

The Star Wars posters (image 2) are a particular favourite as he manages to combine the character/s and story lines in such a simple and minimal composition. His work is a great inspiration for my own — especially as I intend to create a set of magazine cover designs.
